2017 was the Year of the Small Towns for me. I sought out the quiet, hidden, and remote places I find so appealing. These tiny cities were ideal:
1. Bisbee, Arizona 2. Tumacacori, Arizona 3. Tubac, Arizona 4. St. Joseph, Missouri 5. Hannibal, Missouri I traveled nationally and internationally in 2016. I experienced a wide variety of open lands, bustling rivers, expansive seas, small towns, and major cities of the world. Here are my best for the year:
1) Viking River Cruises 2) Amsterdam and Kinderdijk, The Netherlands 3) Cologne, Germany 4) Paris, France 5) State Route 1 Highway, California Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz
A good roadside attraction and rest stop for the little ones that includes: Photo Ops Playground Picnic Site Gift Shop SEWARD COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM 567 Yellow Brick Road Liberal, Kansas http://www.dorothyshouse.com/ If you or the kids are interested in trains, be sure to visit Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri. You can tour the miniature railroad display, see the real thing from an observation bridge above the tracks, read about the history of the station, have lunch, admire the architecture and great hall, or find a dozen other indoor activities for the kids at the station or in the connected Crown Center. Train enthusiasts, history buffs, and those looking to escape the heat or cold will find plenty to do.
For Fisherman's Wharf seafood with a view, dine at Alioto's restaurant. Choose the downstairs for people watching or upstairs for the view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Visit Old Town Sacramento for the history, access to the river, boat tours, food, drinks, treats, music, comedy, shopping, and museums. There is something to interest everyone.
When you visit Venice Beach, be sure to walk on the pier, stroll the boardwalk, see Muscle Beach, and walk along the canals. Venice Beach is the ideal location for people watching, beach activities, and soaking up the Southern California lifestyle.
Clifton's cafeteria and bars are a great destination in LA. Go for casual dining or hang out in the amazing lounge areas. The restored historic building is a delightful surprise in the downtown area.
