Palm Springs

Palm Springs is one of those glamorous locations where relaxing in style is the name of the game.  It is America’s Desert Playground for the discriminating.  Palm Springs and the Desert Communities have attracted visitors to their oasis of palm trees, hot mineral springs, and natural surroundings for more than 100 years.

Palm Springs and the eight surrounding Desert Communities of Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage, have always been a popular destination for travelers worldwide. Located just 109 miles from Los Angeles, the area has been a popular get-away destination for celebrities since the early days of Hollywood. As a result, the streets are named after popular personalities, the entertainment is upscale, and the area offers multiple opportunities to get away from it all.

If you want to mingle with movie, music, or sports superstars, you can time your visit to attend annual events such as the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the PGA’s CareerBuilder Challenge, ATP’s BNP Paribas Open, Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, and other special events that draw big-name celebrities.

If you are a first-time visitor to the area, a must-see attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.  This Tram is a spectacular aerial ride to the San Jacinto mountain station at 8,516 feet.  Ride in one of two 80 passenger rotating tramcars with a 360 degree view of Chino Canyon and the entire Coachella Valley.  This is a spectacular way to see the region and the variety of flora and fauna from a unique vantage point.

Another favorite way to experience the beauty of the desert is the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens.  The Living Desert captures the incredible vitality and extremes of desert life.  The Living Desert features animals, wilderness trails, a walk-through aviary, gardens, and up close and personal encounters with desert animals.  The Park also features an amazing G-scale model train layout that includes the longest trestle in the world. Kids old and young will enjoy this destination.

The Palm Springs Art Museum is also a good way to learn more about the unique area.  The Museum is considered the Desert’s premier cultural institution for art and natural science exhibitions, and educational programs.

Of course, many visitors plan to enjoy their time in the Palm Springs area on the golf courses where visitors can share the links with pros and celebrities.  The area boasts more than 100 golf courses to choose from.  Golfing here has been elevated to an art, and the Courses and Clubs are exceptional.

Other outdoor activities include tennis on more than 600 courts, hiking historic canyons, guided jeep tours, celebrity tours, hot air ballooning, street fairs, botanical gardens, fishing, swimming, windmill tours, biking, skating, horseback riding, and exploring.  World-renowned spas also allow you to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the desert while relaxing and rejuvenating.  The area is filled with exclusive celebrity spas, day use facilities, European-styled spas, and the healing waters of the natural springs.

Dining, shopping, and art galleries are also plentiful through the region.  There are many internationally acclaimed art galleries exhibiting a wide variety of art.  There is world-famous shopping on Palm Canyon Drive, where you can browse an enormous offering of boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and upscale shops. Restaurant choices are abundant and dining is a pleasurable experience at Palm Springs restaurants and a wonderful addition to any day in Palm Springs.

The year-round sunshine, casual vibe, upscale options, and tourist-friendly cities of this Desert Playground make any visit a pleasure.  You are sure to find everything you want in this desert getaway.

TRAVEL TIPS

When to go: Palm Springs is one of the hottest cities in the United States (in more ways than one). The average July temperature is 107 degrees. Take care to stay cool if you visit during the summer.

What to bring: When visiting the area, bring your sunscreen and a good shade hat for the days and a jacket for those cool desert nights. Bring comfortable walking shoes and layers for exploring the desert.

For men: Bring resort wear, a dressy-casual outfit for the nicer restaurants, and a jacket for more formal dining.

Where to stay: Accommodations in the area range from basic to ultra-luxurious. Consider staying at one of the great sprawling resorts or an historic hotel featuring classic architecture.
