If you will be staying in one of the five New York City boroughs, you should consider the opportunity to meet a local New Yorker through Big Apple Greeter. This free service has paired more than 300 plus volunteer Greeters with more than 7,000 visitors each year in neighborhoods throughout the city since Big Apple Greeter started in 1992. If you want to live like a local, find the best neighborhood hangouts, and get recommendations from those in-the-know, consider arranging a meeting with a Big Apple Greeter.
For more information, visit http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/. Are you looking for travel ideas, something fun to do this weekend, a unique activity at your next destination, an easy way to meet locals in a particular city, or just want to find travel inspiration? Consider joining a Meetup group somewhere new at Meetup.com. There are more than 100,000 Meetup groups to choose from around the world. You could choose to meetup with theater lovers in New York City, surfers in California, hikers in Alaska, or photographers in Hawaii. And now through July 15th, you can enter to win a trip up to $5,000 to attend a Meetup event anywhere in the world by RSVPing your attendance at an upcoming Meetup. I have attended several meetup activities in the past and found it a great way to meet new people and enjoy the activities I love. I just signed up for an art class for women and am looking forward to trying my hand at a new activity. I encourage you to check it out, get inspired, and have fun!
This month’s feature story on a humanitarian tour in Guatemala makes me think of all the opportunities we have as travelers to interact differently with the locals at our travel destinations. Although we may come in close contact with the locals who drive the tour bus or cook our food, we can certainly interact in more personal ways at each of our destinations. I am reminded of a story I once read about a well-traveled person who always carried small toys with him on his journeys. His favorite item to bring: balloons. They are small, light, portable, and always delighted the children he met. The balloons and toys transcended all languages and were a good icebreaker to interacting with their parents. Just like on the Guatemala humanitarian tour, the smallest of items can be a delight to children who have so few toys and extras in their lives. Perhaps you can do magic tricks or juggle? These are also good ways to interact with both children and adults around the world—with no additional items to pack or bring. Consider your next trip an opportunity for a humanitarian or cultural exchange on a small scale. That small gesture can bring tremendous goodwill to the locals you meet. And that small exchange may result in a very large impact on your view of that destination and the individuals who live there.
